THE CHALLENGE
IT architectures in production technology still lag far behind “standard” IT. Currently, it is difficult to manage a highly heterogeneous IT landscape in production with a conventional IT system.
This makes it more difficult for companies to efficiently acquire the data they need for ML and AI applications. The fact that data and information from production is not readily available generally means that production teams and data analysts do not readily share knowledge – in fact, there is often a strict separation between the two domains.
In that sense, there are severe limitations on an organization’s ability to combine the flexibility of IT with the predictability and operational reliability of industrial systems and future AI services. There is also a risk that an organization will become dependent on individual providers of production IT, IT infrastructure, control software, or analytics and AI services. It is as important to prevent this from happening as it is to try to stop engineering and production expertise from migrating to platforms controlled by oligopolies.
The solutions currently on offer are usually too specific; they are also difficult to port to other systems, and they only cover certain segments.
THE SOLUTION
The objective of the “FabOS” project is to develop an open, distributed, real-time-capable, and secure operating system for production that will be the IT backbone for the adaptable automation of the factory of the future and the foundation of an ecosystem for data-driven services and AI applications.
Hybrid cloud platforms and IIoT applications are core elements of cyber-physical architectures and will form the basis of future production solutions. FabOS is a platform modeled on an operating system: It provides components that link machines, infrastructure, and services, just as an operating system does with user programs and hardware in the form of an abstraction layer. Reducing IT costs and encapsulating IT complexity to increase usability reduces automation costs.
FabOS makes it easier to change systems and infrastructure in production: from sensors and machinery to entire factories, without system boundaries. This includes consistent life-cycle management of all IT resources, production equipment, technical building equipment, and infrastructure, as well as the creation of standardized infrastructure for real-time-capable, cross-domain value-creation networks for the AI-based autonomous production of the future.
THE SUCCESS STORIES
16,000 components have been digitally recognized since the system was implemented.
This reduces working hours by 30% – time that can now be better spent on other tasks.
